Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command have been called in to investigate an incident at Newcastle Police station today.

A critical incident investigation has been launched after a 45 year old man walked into Newcastle Police station this evening and began to cut his own throat.

At about 6.10pm,  the man began speaking to police before producing a sharp object and then began to injure himself.

The man was tasered by police and restrained before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for surgery.  He is now in a stable condition.

The police station was then shut down.

A critical incident team from Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.

That investigation will be overseen by the Professional Standards Command.
